some sort of a night cap for tonight’s mixing session
gonna write something short…
i’m wrapping up the second mix/master of surgery’s album’s pre-production, tentatively named Electric Euphoria. all i can say is, there’s a lot of room for progress and i’m glad i’m spending this much time with the tracks. come production of the album itself, i’ll be loaded with enough knowledge of the songs and their parts, hopefully. well, i’m making sure that’s going to happen.
the depth of this record has been growing as well. i have a bunch of studies under the microscope right now. lots of research was involved in mixing and mastering. for the vocals, i listened to some alicia keys, imogen heap, and a little sino sikat. for the guitars, i focused on trying to get a good mix of the garage and modern sounds (think tom morello + angus young + stuff). for the bass i just really wanted to get it straight and boom-y. for the overall groove, i wanted this record to have the swagger of audioslave songs, and the sex of michael jackson’s R&B side (rock with you).
i’m just scared of our two new songs. i mean one of them is pretty much good to go, but the other one looks pretty sketchy. the problem with songs that are written along with the process of producing an album is that they’re usually too young to put on record. it’s hit or miss, usually.
it’s only happened twice in my life - both with Don’t Forget, Clementine, that i’ve written a song while recording an album. it’s true that the backbone of “Airports” was written around May-June 2009, but the completion of the song wasn’t until the production of Grace, And Dragging Her Wings. “A Lullaby: From Opinion To Faith,” on the other hand, was a different case. granted that it was a studio song, it was meant to be written while the album was in transit.
surgery doesn’t have room for studio songs (but it has room for remixes), and i don’t think it’s in our process to write block-per-block, because DFC writes per movement anyway - well, as far as “Airports” was concerned. the way surgery writes is pretty old school - we just jam it out until we come up with something. but, it’s easier said than done. i’ve been having riff droughts lately.
well, those are my insecurities as of now. @ysavillar will be coming over to my studio tomorrow so that we can work on the new songs. i hope tomorrow goes well - especially that it’s election day here in the philippines.
